10 SURE FIRE ways to chase away your staff...

I was just talking to an ex-colleague the other day about life and work and other mundane stuff the other day, when I realized that his situation was pretty much similar to mine now when it came to work.

Apparently, this ex-colleague of mine had quite a few pretty unpleasant months at work prior to the time he tendered his resignation. Don't get me wrong, its NOT that his work performance was lousy, its not, on the contrary it was really good (I have to admit la), it was unpleasant because all his superiors have left and hence the people at the top kept pushing ALL THE work to him.

And as if that wasn't enough, they kept refusing to promote him DESPITE having promised him time and again. You see, they minded the fact that he was just an 'O' Level holder. (So all you people out there if you think education is not important, think again)

Which kinda made me realize that one of the VERY GOOD ways to chase away a staff is to load him/her with work. LOADS and LOADS of work that was NOT supposed to be his job in the first place.

I mean, its a different case if you promote the person or you compensate with pay increase or something. Its perfectly fine if it was only for a short period of time, but not for consecutively a few months (and counting).

Not to mention that there wasn't even any word of praise/encouragement or even faked understanding!! *grunts*

Seriously, the past two shitty years I've had with my (current) company has allowed me to come to the following conclusion of 10 SURE FIRE ways to chase away your staff (unwanted or wanted you decide yourself):

1. Overload him/her seriously with other people's work
2. Don't appreciate his/her work after he/she have put in ALOT of effort (and you know it)
3. Reject his/her leave applications PERSISTENTLY
4. Ask him/her for their opinions on certain issues and then continuously putting him/her down for it
5. Scold or blame him/her for every other thing you know its not within their control
6. Quickly advertise for applications for his/her position when you hear RUMORS of his/her intentions to leave or even just to find another job (WITHOUT clarifying with him/her first)
7. KEEP promising him/her a promotion or pay increment and then KEEP giving excuses and putting if off
8. CONTINUOUSLY stressing him/her out with targets and what not (usually works better on sales people)
9. Scold him/her like you would to a dog for a minor mistake
10. Call for as much last minute meetings as possible (works better if you KNOW he/she has an appointment later)

There. You got it. Find anything familiar?

Oh btw, the above list is exhaustible, just that they kinda represent the issues that I'm concerned with now.

Note: some of the above stated are sometimes done on purpose.

NOT ALL of the above mentioned are personal experiences of mine, some of which are what I noticed from fellow colleagues or friends.

p/s: At times like this, I'm so thankful that my HR does not have access to my blog or my friendster account, (else she might just take it as a telltale sign that I intend to leave asap.)
